Pucker up for Valentine's Day

If you’re looking to attain maximum smoochability this February 14th – or feel it’s time to restore some youthful vitality to one of the most noticeable areas of your face – then maybe it’s time to consider lip fillers. It’s one of the most popular treatments on offer here at Surgical Aesthetics, and for good reason – not only does it make your mouth more prominent, it can also smooth out any lines and wrinkles around that area. Here’s a brief Q&A on the procedure…

Why would anyone need lip fillers?

There are two main reasons: as we age, the natural volume deposits in our face begin to decrease, which leads to lines and wrinkles. Add in the years of muscle movement and exposure to sunlight, and it’s not surprising that there is a marked deterioration to the area around the mouth – a condition that lip fillers can put right.

How does a lip filler procedure work?

Simply put, it’s an injection of dermal fillers – a product that usually consists of collagen, hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyl, depending on the procedure – which puts back the volume and smooths out the ravages of time. The amount of filler used depends on the look you want, combined with the advice of the practitioner. Using a very fine needle, the filler is injected into the lip area, adding volume and improving the elasticity, and restoring the skin’s hydrobalance.

How long does the procedure take?

The actual procedure takes 15 minutes, although you are advised to block an hour of your time out - as the procedure involves a consultation with the practitioner and the application of a topical numbing cream which makes the procedure more manageable.

Does the procedure hurt?

Previous clients have reported a slight discomfort during the treatment, but a bearable one. The topical numbing cream takes a lot of the pain out of the procedure.

Will I require any downtime afterwards?

No. You’ll be able to go straight back to work after the procedure, should you need to. You may experience a redness around the area, as well as swelling, itching, bruising or tenderness around the affected area, although this will disappear after two to three days. So you may want to give your lips a day or two to settle down before that big date.

How long will the effects of lip filler treatment last?

This depends on many factors – your age, the quality of your skin, your health and lifestyle. But the general lifespan of a lip filler treatment is in the region of six months.

Obviously, for such a precise and personal procedure, it pays to make sure you’re dealing with the professionals. Here at Surgical Aesthetics, only fillers from reputable manufacturers that have been approved by the FDA are used, by fully-qualified practitioners. To book an appointment with us, click here.
